Uña encarnada: por qué aparece y cómo tratarla sin cirugíaIngrown toenail: why it happens and how to treat it without surgeryEingewachsener Zehennagel: Warum er entsteht und wie man ihn ohne Operation behandelt

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail digs into the surrounding skin. It usually affects the big toe and causes pain, redness and swelling; if left untreated, it can become infected.

Most common causes

  • Cutting the nails too short or rounding off the corners.
  • Narrow shoes or shoes with a low toe box.
  • Repeated knocks or minor injuries, for example during sport.
  • The natural shape of the nail: some tend to curve inwards.

What to avoid

It's tempting to try to “dig out” the corner of the nail at home, but using scissors or clippers usually makes the wound worse and increases the risk of infection. If the toe is red, hot or oozing, it's best to come in for an appointment.

Conservative treatment

In many cases an ingrown toenail can be treated without surgery. In clinic we carefully free the ingrown area, relieve the pressure and give you advice on nail cutting and footwear so it doesn't come back.

What is onychorthosis?

When the nail tends to curve and the problem keeps recurring, onychorthosis (nail bracing) helps to correct its shape gradually using a device fitted to the nail — much like braces for teeth. It's a painless treatment which, with follow-up, helps the nail grow with a flatter curve.

Tip: cut your toenails straight across without trimming the corners too short, and choose shoes that leave room for your toes.

Was Sie vermeiden sollten
